Descriptive info: Progamming.. Where I started.. My first computer related job was as an Operator working on and ICL 1902A.. A monster machine.. Single tasking with 16K words (24 bit words) of core memory and 16 Meg of Disk and it filled a huge computer room.. I wrote my first program in 1974 on that machine using a utility called TABN aka FileTab.. It was a language based on Desision Tables.. The simplest TABN program to write was the equivelant of cat(1) where STDIN was the card reader and STDOUT was the printer.. Here is the program.. #GO.. Thats about all I remember about the language now.. Next I tought myself PLAN 4 the ICL 1900 Assembler.. But since I was working in a none computer related industry COBOL seemed to be the Language of choice.. So I set about learning that.. Though many of the PLAN programmers claimed it would not catch on as it generated such massive object files.. My First programming Job was in 1978 working on Texas Instruments 990/10 systems.. The software house was a COBOL shop.. Though I soon became bored with writeing accounting programmes.. So I turned to 990 assembler.. The 990 was strange beast.. It kept it's registers in memory.. :-).. I Joined Texas Instruments in 1984 as Software Engineer continueing to work on and support 990 systems running the DX10 and DNOS operating systems.. COBOL still featured high in my skill set  ...   more free in the style of the source.. None the less I still have great affection for COBOL even though my prefered lanugage these days is C followed by Perl.. Pet Hate.. My pet hate is the constant argument in alt.. cobol about whether C or COBOL is the best language.. I am open minded about this.. I have written a few polygot programs that will compile both via the GNU C compiler and Micro Focus COBOL compilers.. Polygots.. All of these programs compile with C or COBOL compilers.. Though in some cases C will give warnings.. hello.. cbl.. is my original Hello World.. Polygot.. hw.. c.. is my latest Hello World.. best.. is my original program to compare the functionality of C v COBOL.. better.. is my latest program to compare the functionality of C v COBOL.. Quine (Self Printing program).. A favorite hacker passtime is writting a Quine.. That is a program that when run will list it's source.. These are some of the quines I have written.. quine.. sh.. A Bourne shell script of course it is really quite trivial.. :-).. A COBOL program not quite so trivial.. Real Programmers.. When I grow up I would like to be a.. Real Programmer.. The Jargon Dictionary.. One of my favorite computer books is.. The Hackers Dictionary.. It is avilable on the web as.. Grace Hopper.. Story of Admiral Grace Hopper.. Admiral Grace Murray Hopper.. (1906-1992).. Google Grace..

Descriptive info: Badly Designed User Interfaces.. Introduction.. I've finally found the time to doing this page on poor user interfaces.. Over the years I've written and designed a number of software systems and web pages.. This is my thoughts on the matter.. The first poor interface I can remember coming across was in the 1971.. I was working for a Car component manufacturer as a Parts controller.. Each morning I would be given a "Stock list", This list was about 2000 Sheets of fanfold paper Detailing the stock of all of the part the company sold.. It pretty much lists every Bumper, Door handle, Lock and Window winder for every British car ever manufactured.. So that was about 120,000 items.. Now with all the will in the world no one can read the whole thing.. It was of course just for reference.. but what a waste of paper.. Many of the parts as you can imagine were out of stock.. and quite rightly.. The company made things to order.. I suggested to the "Data Processing Dept" Why not just print a list of the item we have orders for.. Well a shape intake of breath and all sorts of reasons why it could not be done but i persited and eventualy got my way.. Once the other saw the "New Style" they wanted it too.. These days we are surounded by technology.. But IMHO  ...   a bit like Tom Tom does.. As the Speed increases then the map should zoom out automagicaly.. Address Entry.. 1.. You need to enter the Country.. OK thats fair enough.. I do plan trip to France from The UK.. So I enter France, and the rest of the address.. It works I get to the far off place in France.. I travel around a bit and eventualy I want to go home.. Home is a presett destinaion and I can select it quickly or use the Voice Controll and say "Destination Home" Low and behold the GPS guides me home.. The next day I want to go to some place in the UK The GPS remembers that the last time I entered an address it was a french address.. So I have to manually change the country back to the UK.. It's a GPS it knows where it is.. Why doesn't it switch back to UK Automagicaly.. That would be the logical thing to do.. 2.. You then enter the City/Town Street and House number.. AS you enter these items it will do auto completion and when you are down to a choice of five Towns or streets presents you with a list to choose from even if there is only one item to show.. If there is only one item "just use it" don't bother asking if thats what I want..

Descriptive info: Gamble Family History.. I am current doing research in to my ancestors.. My brother started the research some time a go.. You may well have come across a few sites that have references to the information he had gathered before he died.. I belive he may have some errors in his information but I can;t ask him why he thinks the links are as he had documented..
